MIGHTY BUT FLAWED

ims teachings month of June 2013

In this month’s ims teachings, I want to reflect on the life history of six characters in the bible, who because of a flaw in their character, proves to be a sign of weakness at the peak of their ministry.

These are mighty men of valour in the sight of the Lord – but they choose to succumb to temptation because of flesh weakness. Here is a list of these characters’, their flaws and the references in the scripture.

David’s weakness is Lust. The foundation scripture is 2nd Samuel 11 and 12

Elijah’s was overzealous in his attitude towards God even in the face of an adversary like Jazebel. This story is found in 1st Kings 19 vr 13-18; Deuteronomy 31 vr 12 and Deuteronomy 31 vr 6-8.

Eli’s mistake was he was complacent in the face of all the atrocities that his sons are committing. When he acted it was too late. The background scripture for this is 1st Samuel 2 vr 12-17; 22-25; 27-36.

Gideon’s flaw was doubt. God called him to lead the battle against the Midianites, but he kept on questioning God and requesting for signs as proof that God is really sending him. The scripture accompanying this story is in Judges 6 note vrs 11, 15, 36 and 39.

I now turn the spotlight on Moses. Moses’s weakness was anger. At the peak of his ministry his anger made him reach the end of his tether when God asked him to speak to the rock to bring forth water instead he struck the rock. That act caused his downfall  because he did not enter the promise land. The scripture to back this up is found in the book of Numbers 20 vr 7-12.

Saul of Tarsus has a rebellious spirit as his character flaw. His battle with the Amaliakites ended in disaster because he disobeyed God instructions and did things his own way, dethroned him. The scripture is 1st Samuel 15 verses 7-30.

The title we bear as Christians don’t make us immune from any of these flaws characterised in the lives of these great men of God. In case you are a victim of any of these flaws beloved, believe that it was God who has commission your ministry and He alone has the power to deliver you from the power of darkness and translate you into His marvellous light through Jesus Christ.

When Christ was crucified, he suffered both in the flesh and paid with His blood. Through His blood, we have redemption and forgiveness of sin. Through his broken flesh we practice holiness and maintain our righteousness in the sight of God.

The bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the father except through him. Your walk in Christendom is not going to be an easy one, but with God all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose.

Stay bless in the month of June 2013.

Standing up for justice

Jeremiah 1 vrs 5

Today’s media is bereft with news about social injustice that is occurring in many parts of the world. Whatever your role is as a worker in God’s vineyard – Does our God want us to act? Does he want us to take matters into our own hands and intervene?

This May 2013 online ims teachings focuses on the biblical character of Moses – the man God choose to lead the Children of Israel from captivity in Egypt and exodus into the Land of Canaan.

Moses had God’s calling to carry out this mission. This calling commenced long before Moses was born as the bible tells us in Jeremiah 1 vrs 5. And God’s plan to fulfil His purpose was hatched when Pharaoh’s daughter rescued baby Moses from the river Nile in Egypt.

Moses was brought up as a baby, by his own mother and the instinct to understand the prosecution his people, the Israelites, are going through in Egypt, is imbedded in his identity as a Hebrew growing up in Pharaoh’s household.

The time came as a young man in Egypt when he felt he had to stand up for justice for his people – but he chooses the wrong strategy to do it. Moses killed the Egyptian oppressor in order to redeem his Hebrew kinsman inadvertently going ahead of God’s plan to redeem the Israelites from bondage in Egypt Genesis 15 vrs 13, 14, 15 and 16.

In God’s response to social injustice globally, He wants to hear the cry and repentance of a nation before divine intervention would come. “If my people which are call by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” 2nd Chronicles 7 vrs 14.

I want to present to you five keys in recognising God’s calling in your life as follows:

  • When God calls you – He will provide you protection and shield you from attacks from your adversary until the day you are ready to take up your ministerial mantle and serve Him – and also guarantee you His protection thereafter.

  • When you fear God, He will give you wisdom to discern his time frame towards your calling.

  • Practice forgiveness and allow God’s vengeance to always prevail against your enemies.

  • When you step out in faith practice obedience and seek to reverence God’s word in all areas of your life.

  • God wants you to honour and praise Him in respect of every breakthrough your achieve in your ministry.

The desires of the flesh and The Holy Spirit empowerment

Romans 9: 1

John 4: 24

Luke 1: 15

Galatians 5: 16-26

Matthew 26:41

CHRIST HAS RISEN ALLELUIA!

Biblically speaking, we believers in Jesus Christ already know the contest between our indwelling Holy Spirit and the desires of the flesh. The  Holy Spirit is define as the indwelling Spirit of God through which men receive effective power, through Jesus Christ in bringing men into fellowship with God.

God created Adam (the first man on this earth) as a perfect superior spiritual being. As a result of the empowering of the Holy Spirit, Adam has dominion over everything that God created and place in the Garden of Eden. Adam’s perfect and superior spirituality rather defined his position in the higher echelon with God. In that position God allowed  Adam to enjoy the following privileges.

  • Adam walk and talk with God on a one-to-one basis.
  • The animals were his friends.
  • God created Eve to be his companion and provide support.
  • He carried God’s glory and light made possible by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Later Adam and Eve became victims of temptation  driven by the adversary and they became the iconic gateway by which sin entered into this world. It was at this stage that the battle line was drawn – the dividing thin invisible frontier  between the desires of the flesh and The Holy Spirit empowerment.

To succumb to the desires of the flesh is sin – as believers in Jesus Christ already know that God forgive us when we sin but we cannot escape the consequences.

The Holy Spirit empowerment in us is justification of righteousness and holiness. It empowers the believer in Jesus Christ to operate in a realm beyond the understanding of the ORDINARY PERSON.

Today we thank God for sending His son Jesus Christ who came and died for our sins and set us free – and restore His hope and glory.

Stay bless this Easter.
